DIM Reviews “Aitu” by Melodyguild

Japanese blog, Drowning in Melancholy aka DIM, reviewed ‘Aitu’ by Melodyguild — the early 2000’s band of Suzanne Perry. This mini-feature gives a brief overview of the band’s origin as it compares the sound of this album vs Love Spirals Downwards’ work. Here is a partial transcription care of Google Translate.

This is the elusive first EP of the dream pop band with Suzanne Perry, the vocalist of Love Spirals Downwards. It was released by the prestigious Projekt Records, which has produced many masterpieces. For some reason, it is listed as Love Spirals Downwards on subscription services, but Ryan Lum is not involved and it is a completely different band. Melodyguild was formed in 2002 by members of the LA dream pop band The Von Trapps. With Suzanne Perry as the vocalist, they released this album in 2008 on Projekt Records.

While LSD puts forward the fantasy beauty derived from medieval and folk music, Melodyguild’s style is closer to universal dream pop and shoegaze, but Suzanne Perry still shows off her angelic voice reminiscent of Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. #3 “Flicker” has a beautiful roaring part that was not possible in LSD, and #4 “Un parallel” shows a dark side, revealing new charms, and fans would have been very excited to see what would come next. However, the band has since been lost, and this was their first and last album.

Projekt Records is engraved in history as a nexus between gothic and shoegaze. Melodyguild may be like a shooting star that flashed for a moment and then disappeared in that vast star map, but I hope that it will continue to remain in the memories of many people in the future.
